Guide to the Best Vegetarian & Vegan Restaurants in Paris

Are you Vegan or Vegetarian and looking for great restaurants to eat at during your stay in Paris? Then look no further than our in-depth guide on the best plant-based restaurants in the city.

Paris has a long-standing reputation for being a nightmare for vegans and vegetarians and until recently, this was very accurate. For many tourists who wanted to avoid animal-based food, it was an experience trying to eat at a French bistro. You would be lucky to get a plate of fries and salad without being scoffed at. It just wasn’t a thing here. However recently there’s been a shift towards more vegetable-based diets and with it, many great vegetarian restaurants.

Despite the nation’s fervent support of meat and fish based food, the French absolutely love fresh fruit and vegetables. There is some incredible produce that comes out of France and it’s really easy to find – even outside of Paris. Forget tasteless vegetables out of season, in France you’ll find the best, home grown seasonal produce available in markets across the country. This of course translates to some great food being cooked in vegetarian restaurants up and down the nation. Read on to discover the best vegan & vegetarian restaurants in Paris.

The Best Plant Based Restaurants in Paris

If you’re looking for a plant-based restaurant to grab lunch or dinner in Paris then read on. Our list includes the best vegetarian and vegan restaurants that have been tried and tested. Restaurants are listed in no particular order.

Riz Riz

Riz Riz is an awesome vegan restaurant specialising in root-to-stem cuisine. That means that there’s 0 waste from any ingredients that they use – and that’s impressive. Their food doesn’t revolve around a specific cuisine but you can expect curries inspired from South East Asia, buddha bowls and spiced ragús. They have a sort of tasting menu where for a very reasonable €30 you can have a small portion of 8 dishes from their menu. Their desserts are awesome as well – matcha cheesecake and their ‘incredible chocolate’ desserts were extremely well done. The food is clean, inventive and well seasoned. Riz Riz is a great choice if you want to have a vegan meal in the middle of Paris in a relaxed, friendly environment.

The Friendly Kitchen

If you’re on the hunt for a modern, vegan, bistronomic dining experience then the friendly kitchen is the one. The warm and super cosy restaurant is located in the trendy 11th arrondissement next to the Voltaire metro station. The food that comes out of the kitchen is impressive. There’s a no-holds-barred approach with layers upon layers of punchy flavour. Eggplant is roasted with miso and served with a really interesting lime and peanut butter infused hummus. They use pickled offcuts to add acidity into their dishes which is a great way to cut down on food waste. There’s even a vegan cheese platter on the menu sourced from a local vegan cheese maker.

Krishna Bhavan

Krishna Bhavan is a great South Indian restaurant serving only vegetarian food. On the menu are a whole host of vegetarian curries, thaalis and dosas. The individual curry highlights for me are chana masala with spinach (chickpea curry), paneer butter masala (butter based curry with paneer cheese) and dal makandi (lentils cooked in a butter sauce). The dosas (an Indian crêpe made with rice and lentil flour) are generous and come with some awesome chutneys. If you’re unfamiliar with Indian food I’d recommend trying one of their thaalis. Thaalis are trays that come with a small amount of many curries, rice, roti flat bread, chutneys and a dessert. Their thaali du Nord is excellent and comes with some really flavourful curries. It’s also worth noting that their curries and chutneys have a nice amount of heat but are more than tolerable for the average palate.

Hank Burger

One of the pioneers of vegan food in Paris, Hank Burger has been serving up vegan burgers since 2014. With two restaurants in Paris and one in Lyon, their plant-based burgers have been a huge success. It’s as you would expect, a quick service burger joint, so don’t plan a long sit-down dinner here. Their burgers are solid, classic combos but 100% vegan. I’m not sure what exactly their patties are made of but it seems like a mix of tofu, red beans and mushrooms. The result is an umami rich burger served with traditional toppings (lettuce, tomato, pickles and sauces). It’s a great choice if you’re in Le Marais or near the Cadet metro station and you’re after a quick, plant-based bite.

Le Potager de Charlotte

Le Potager de Charlotte is a great vegan restaurant that was started by the Valentin brothers in 2015. Due to their success, they’ve now got two locations in the 9th and 17th arrondissements. Their food offering blends various cuisines for a bistronomic experience and focuses on one core ingredient. For entrées, you can expect sesame marinated firm tofu which is seasoned with lime, spring onion and French espelette pepper. There’s also grilled romaine lettuce cores which gives an amazing smokey flavour and works really well with the garlic dressing. For the mains there’s roasted eggplant seasoned with pistachio, pomegranate and mint. Their wine menu includes mainly organic or natural wines from France.

42 Degrés

42 Degrés is a creative, natural vegan restaurant with a focus on raw vegetables. Their minimalist, cosy restaurant is located in the 9th arrondissement next to the Poissonnière metro station. Their menu is simple and revolves around the quality of the ingredients they use. The entrées include heritage tomato salad with an incredible pesto and a take on a gazpacho soup with courgettes and fresh thyme. Their main courses are fairly classic and include a vegan Pad Thai, portobello mushroom burger and a lovingly made vegetable lasagna.
